Roger Sowry Homecare Medical's new chairman
8 December 2015
New Zealand telehealth services provider Homecare Medical has announced the appointment of Roger Sowry as independent Chairman of the Homecare Medical Board.
Mr Sowry will take over from current Chair Dr Martin Seers on Tuesday 15 December.
Private consultant, experienced director and a former MP and Cabinet Minister, he has a passion for improving the health and wellness of New Zealanders.
With a 15-year career in Parliament holding portfolios such as social welfare and associate health, experience as the chief executive of Arthritis New Zealand and a partner at Saunders Unsworth, Mr Sowry brings a wealth of knowledge to Homecare Medical's Board.
He currently chairs a range of other boards spanning the education, telecommunications and technology sectors, including TeamTalk, Weltec and Whitireia Polytechnic council, and Huawei New Zealand's advisory council. Mr Sowry is also a chartered member of the Institute of Directors and a member of the Electricity Authority.
Dr Seers welcomes Mr Sowry to the Board. Dr Seers has held the Chair position for the last two years; he will remain a Homecare Medical Board member and continue as Chair of the Clinical Governance Committee.
'Mr Sowry is a valuable addition to the Homecare Medical line-up. He brings considerable business and governance experience - in both Government and non-Government sectors - and expert oversight to an organisation focussed on virtually supporting people of Aotearoa New Zealand to stay well,' Dr Seers says.
'Attracting such a high calibre chair is a true testament to Homecare Medical's dedication to quality and innovation,' he says.
Mr Sowry explains: 'My experience in telecommunications, technology and delivering healthcare as an NGO in New Zealand helped me to decide to put my hand up to be involved and to support Homecare Medical to deliver telehealth services that more effectively meet the needs of NZ and provide a platform for continuous care innovation and improvement.'
Homecare Medical is a partnership between Pegasus Health and ProCare, two of New Zealand's largest primary health networks.
Homecare Medical is a New Zealand organisation providing tele-triage services to around 600 practices throughout New Zealand, covering about 2.2 million people. We have a large nursing and mental health and addictions workforce - all our people are committed to delivering quality care and important information to those who call. We have call centres in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch but are national in our reach.
In June 2015 Homecare Medical was announced as the Ministry of Health's partner to develop and deliver a new, enhanced, integrated, national telehealth service for New Zealand.
The ProCare Network is New Zealand's largest Primary Health Organisation (PHO) and has more than 800,000 patients (over 55%) enrolled throughout the greater Auckland region, including the largest Māori and Pacific populations in NZ. ProCare Health Limited supports the network's more than 180 practices through a range of clinical products and programmes for their patients and practice business services. It is 92% owned by the ProCare Charitable Foundation and 8% owned by GP shareholders.
Pegasus Health is a charitable company that supports 109 practices and 400,000 enrolled patients within Canterbury. The Pegasus community includes 340 member GPs, 470 practice nurses and nearly 400 support staff, as well as other community providers.
Both ProCare and Pegasus are clinically led, with strong clinical governance boards and robust quality and professional management structures. For all three organisations, keeping people of Aotearoa New Zealand well drives our passion for delivering outstanding, clinically-led services to our clients.
